The Project
On nearly every page of this portfolio, there is a mention of my Eagle Scout project. Because of this, I figure it would be best to include some background on what my Eagle Scout project is.
What is an Eagle Scout Project?
Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable by a Boy Scout. There is a multitude of work which is required for a scout to attain the award. This includes everything from teaching skills such as fire making to keeping a budget of income and expenses for three months. There is also the service project. This project requires the boy to be the leader of a project that will benefit the community. Completion of this project requires leadership, determination, hard work and the ability to follow through with a goal.

My Eagle Scout Project
For my Eagle Project, I chose to replace two tall signs visible on US-27, the highway which runs through my hometown of Shepherd, Michigan. The forty-foot tall signs proudly display "SHEPHERD" to all who drive by on the highway. Because the old signs (pictured below) were falling into a state of disrepair and were leaving the impression that our community was not well maintained on all those who drove by, I chose to replace them for my service project. This required me to do all of the fund raising, order and pick up the signs, organize workers and equipment as well as take down the old signs and replace them with the new ones (also pictured below).
Media Coverage
The work that I did for the project was featured on the front page of our local newspaper. The story which features comments made by myself and our council's scout executive, Brian Nastase. The image that ran on the front page of the paper along with the article is shown to the right. There was also a follow up article which talks about the scouting program and its impact on the community. |
